Description
This card depicts devotees?gathering around the chariot of Rato Machhindranath to worship the lord during Rato Machhindranath Festival, the biggest annual festival of Patan. Rato Machhindranath is also considered as the Tantric edition of Avalokitesvara in Buddhism and the incarnation of Lord Shiva, who can bring rain in Hinduism.
The Three Story temple of Rato Machhindranath, the god of rain and plenty, is situated few minutes ‘ walk to the south from Patan Durbar Square towards the west side of the road, standing in a large, spacious courtyard.
The Machhindranath image is just a crudely carved piece of Red-Painted wood, however, each year it is Paraded around the town on a temple chariot during the Rato Machhindranath Festival. In this complex celebration, the chariot is moved from place to place for several weeks in the month of April-May.
